![]() I like that it’s a found family fic more than an adoption fic, and that everyone took a long time to get to where they end up. I’m really proud of this fic, I think Julie is in the whole story in a way that felt very important to me. ![]() And I wanted to explore how complicated the situation would be - for Mildred, for Hecate, for Pippa. And I absolutely wanted to avoid Hecate and Pippa finding happiness at Julie Hubble’s expense. I felt I had to be very careful because I never wanted Julie’s death to be a mechanism for Pippa and Hecate to suddenly be mothers to Mildred. I set out to write what (eventually) became she said love don’t come easy and this fic really took me by surprise. without this, Rowan comes off as being made unsettling just because he's 'different' - and by different i mean neurodivergent-coded. to have Erin and Rowan be very similar in their backgrounds, intelligence and interests.i feel that it would have made for such a compelling narrative to have Erin actively trying to win Rowan back to how he 'used to be' - to show that a distinct choice was made between the two. perhaps them having been friends and/or romantically involved at one point, only to diverge on their respective principles: Erin, and her desire to fit in whilst not causing harm, and Rowan, with his desire to prove the world wrong and his own genius.Īnd it turns out, as found out by asking Paul Feig, this dichotomy was very much intentional. But oh my goodness you already know that we have talked EXTENSIVELY about the massive missed potential for Erin/Rowan!! this is gonna bleed heavily over into the 'what i wish had happened with this character' question, but watching the movie for the first time i was struck by how easy it would have been to write a PERSONAL motive for Rowan - for him to have been an intellectual peer of Erin's.
